  • Prepping Each Piece

    The jolly blade is adjusted to the molds. Every shape is different. A Dinner plate needs to be thicker than an Eggo plate structurally, so each one is adjusted with the thickness with each form in mind.

  • Prepping the Slab for Jiggering

    The pre-made slabs are placed in the mold and while the wheel spins, pressure is applied to the jigger arm and the blade slowly cuts into the piece, forming the inner shape. Each piece should have a smooth surface and an evenly filled-in double rim, the signature Saturn Dinnerware look.

  • Jigger/Jolly

    A machine known as a Jigger/Jolly. Jiggering/Jollying is a way of producing uniform pottery using a plaster mold on a wheel and an arm with a blade that cuts away clay as the wheel spins.

  • Finishing

    Before taking the mold off of the wheel, the lip is refined by hand to make for an easier time trimming later.

  • Trimming

    The jollied forms then sit in the molds for about 5-6 hours. Once the pieces are dry, they are flipped out onto a bat and set out to trim.

  • Finishing

    Each piece is put back on the wheel, placed on to a foam bat, and trimmed to clean up the edges for a softer rim.

  • Drying

    Between forming and firing, the pieces are left to dry for around a week before the biscuit firing. This slow drying process cuts down on warping and lowers the amount of seconds that come out of each firing. Our bisque program is low and slow and takes about two days.

  • Bisque Firing/Glaze Prep

    Before we’re ready to glaze, a few things need to be prepped. Each piece gets wiped down and masked where wel later stamp the logo.

  • Glazing

    Over time the glazes settle out and need to be thoroughly mixed before they are used.

  • Hand-Dipped

    Using tongs, each piece is dipped for a predetermined amount of time. Then carefully shaken to remove any drips and even out the glaze surface.

  • Finishing the Foot

    After the piece is dried, a metal rib is used to scrape the excess glaze off the foot before it is wiped down with a sponge.

  • Makers Mark

    The masking tape is removed carefully using a needle tool before it is stamped with the BKLYN CLAY Made logo.

  • Glaze Firing

    The pieces are left out to dry overnight before being loaded into the kiln for their final firing to about 2230 degrees Fahrenheit.
